The first of many symptoms of faulty gas caps is likely going to be a gas cap that is loose or a gas cap that won’t completely tighten. This may seem insignificant initially, but if it’s not completely sealed then the entire fuel system can be contaminated with dirt and grime. If your gas cap isn’t sealing properly, try checking the rubber gasket to be sure it’s not brittle or missing. If you drive an old car or truck, be sure the metal gas cap isn’t damaged or bent. Both can cause gas cap issues and may require a replacement from the manufacturer.
What issues can an ill-fitting gas cap cause, well a check engine light? A loose gas cap will not only let in grime and dirt, but it can allow fuel vapors to escape the fuel tank. These vapors may produce an error in the emissions system, which could cause the check engine light to illuminate. Dirt and Grime that gets into the fuel tank can also contaminate the fuel injectors over time. Perhaps the most common sign of a bad gas cap is the gasoline smell inside your vehicle.
These days you may see no gas cap on new cars, but if your vehicle wasn’t built with a capless gas tank, you shouldn’t drive without a gas cap installed. If your vehicle is a little older, there’s a chance that gasoline could leak out from the fuel tank during hard cornering or enthusiastic driving. If you drive without a gas cap, it can lead to diminished fuel economy because the fuel might evaporate without a fully-sealed fuel filler. The smell is the fuel evaporating from your fuel tank, causing reduced fuel economy.
If you’ve checked out the gas cap, the problems you’re having might be due to bad fuel. If a car has trouble starting, will not accelerate, or just isn’t running smoothly, then it’s possible you just have a bad tank of gas.
