One of the most uneasy feelings is when you notice your car shaking while driving. Is it a flat tire, did a pothole damage my car suspension, or do I have a busted driveshaft? There are several things that could be the cause of the vehicle vibrating, and the severity of the potential damage can vary greatly. The most likely cause of the vibrating usually happens near your vehicle’s rims and tires. The rims and tires plant the vehicle to the road, and if anything is a bit wonky, will notice. More seriously, it might be a broken transmission mount or a broken control arm. These more major failures may leave you stuck on the side of the road.

If you got different tires recently, the vehicle shaking could be caused by the wheels and tires not getting balanced correctly. Tire balancing is making sure the tire and wheel weight is. If you feel the tire vibration when you are driving, it may be a tire that is no longer balanced. If you have confirmed that the new tires and wheels are properly balanced, but the car is still vibrating, be sure to check if the lugnuts are completely tightened, and ensure the tire pressure is correct. If your tires are causing the shudder, you should get them checked out immediately.
If your car shudders when braking, that is a pretty strong indicator that you should have your brakes looked at. The most likely reason for your steering wheel shudder is worn brake rotors. When a driver pushes down on the brake pedal, the brake pads squeeze the brake rotors to create friction which will then stop your vehicle. A smooth brake rotor surface provides smooth braking. A warped surface will vibrate when braking, sort of like how a brick road feels bumpier than an asphalt highway. Other possible causes of the shaking include frozen calipers or damaged suspension components. If you feel your steering wheel begin to wobble, bring it to us, and we’ll check it out.
